NEWS> gov chime approves 4.5bn for reconstruction of roads in enugu

The Enugu State government has approved the award of contracts worth over 4.5 billion naira for the construction, rehabilitation, designing and marking of some urban and rural roads in the state.
The State commissioner for information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, who disclosed this while briefing the press on the outcome of a meeting of the State Executive Council, said that out of the said amount, the sum of N2.475 billion will be spent on the reconstruction of the, now almost immotorable New Market-Miliken-Hill Ngwo-9th Mile Corner road.
The contract, he said, was awarded to C.G.C Nigeria Limited.
The sum of N1.379 billion, according to the commissioner, was approved for the construction of the 19.5 kilometre Ikedimkpa Affa-Amofia-Agu-Oghu road with the contract awarded to Greyline International Ltd.
He observed that the affected communities particularly Oghu have been without access road for decades.
He added that the sum of N315.5 million was set aside for the designing and marking of 32 selected priority roads in Enugu metropolis in a contract awarded to Messrs Ronchess Global Resources Limited.
The affected roadss are Agbani Road, Edozie and Kenyatta Streets, Savage Crecent, Nnamdi Azikiwe Avenue, Jim Nwobodo Avenue, ESBS junction to Maryland, Amechi Road and Agric Bank-Ozubulu-Port Harcourt expressway, among others.
Ugwoke said the council also approved the payment of the counterpart fund of the sum of N411.9 million to the Universal Basic Education Board.
This, he said, would allow the State Government access the 2013 Federal Government Statutory allocation of UBE matching grant that stood at over N1.37 billion.
He added that the council also approved the programme for the 2013 Enugu State Tourism and Cultural Fiesta in December, noting that the fiesta which would last for eleven days would feature symposium, arts exhibition, cultural fashion show and praise night.
Other activities he said, include childrens’ party, road block and musical jamboree that will feature the Werrso Band for Democratic Republic of Congo among others.
