My Book of Short Stories: Tasteless Sugar
TASTELESS SUGAR
It was a bright Saturday morning, mama & my siblings
have left for the market. Mama has earlier warned me to steer clear from Idoko
the notorious criminal in the village, but her instructions fell on deaf ears,
as I was determined to live luxuriously.
So I deemed it fit that this was the moment I can get close
to Idoko to explain my desire to be an ally to him. So I left the house working
very fast to avoid anyone seeing me. At last I got to meet Idoko who was
holding a bottle of whiskey in his hand, after exchanging pleasantries, I
explained the reason I have come to see him, after my explanations, he smiled
& said he love smart kids like me, he further said he was on a mission to
the market square, if I mind joining him, I agreed without hesitation. We made
our way to the butchers shop, where he
asked me to go & snatch the man’s money bag from the shop, in other for
Idoko not to see me as a coward I agreed without hesitation.
The odds weren’t in my favour, I was caught by the butchers
son, who immediately raised alarm, I was lynched by an angry crowd, the next
thing I realized was fuel being poured on my body, a man from the crowd shouted
“wait make I light the fire, I was pleading for mercy but to no avail, that
moment Nneka my sister tapped my back & shouted “ Dede wake up we are late
for school”.
I woke up thanking God it was only a dream, with that I had
a change of mindset.
Immorality does not pay.
